Villwock survives close encounter with 'golden retriever' for 14th-straight pole
Dave Villwock cut his first qualifying attempt short because he saw a dog swimming in the Columbia River. He had no such distractions on his second attempt.
Villwock steered the U-1 Spirit of Qatar 96 to an average lap speed of 159.645 mph to easily take the top qualifying position for this weekend's Lamb Weston Columbia Cup in the Tri-Cities, Wash.
The "dog," which Villwock described as a golden retriever, turned out to be the foam base of a course buoy which had become submerged in the rising river. Once officials checked out the area, Villwock was cleared to claim his 14th-straight top qualifying position dating back to the 2010 season opener.
Steve David was second fastest in the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison, coming in at 158.155. The always mischievous David couldn't help poking a little fun at his rival, saying he easily could have gone faster if not for an animal he too saw in the river.
